ÉCHANTILLONS SONORES

This project is the result of a research developed over the course of a decade, during which I recorded and cataloged portions of sounds and noises that captured me not only on a sensorial level, but also empathically and emotionally. The recordings have remained frozen for all these years in the mode of sound postcards. Like odors, they remain intangible, but they are trigger phenomena of reminiscent impressions of micro-eternity. Extrapolating them intermittently from their original context, I have tried to expand their power of interaction through new ways of expression. The recordings were made in the wilderness and in metropolitan and urban contexts of Italy, France, Germany, England, Japan, the United States and Indonesia, between 2009 and 2019. Among the collected fragments of sound reality, you can hear the voices of the speakers in Japanese metropolitan stations, the sirens of the port of Genoa, (the mechanical verses of the cable cars of Hakuba-Nagano, the buzz in the Izakaya of Hiroshima, the thuds of stampings in Tuscan post offices, the creaking of the iron bridges of Gare du Nord in Paris, the mysterious dialogue between drafts and statues of the Greek theater of Akrai in Sicily, the roar of the eruptions of the Stromboli volcano, the gurgling of the streams by Rocchetta Nervina, the thunder in the French countryside of Burgundy, the confused shouting in the Shibuya subway or the boarding of Tokyo's Narita airport, the vibrations of electrical networks in Berlin, a broken elevator of San Salvario in Turin, the singing of gamelan during Balinese religious ceremonies, the last drops of water flying on iron plates after the storm in Apricale, the rustling music of the maritime pines in Grimaldi, the serenades of the ci Coves Mediterranee and others. From the impalpable body of this immense acoustic archive I have selected 21 recordings, each of which I have given new form and substance through the creation of a collage that tries to interpret the sound making it visible and tangible. Each collage includes its own phonetics, as a graphic representation of the sound it depicts. A single sound track was then created, putting all the recordings in mutual relation and transforming them into a choir. Geophony, biophony and anthropophony interact here creating a theatrical language: starting from the alternation of the original pure sounds, we move on to the progressive random shuffling and we create a rich euphony that outlines unexplored acoustic landscapes inhabited by new sound elements. (like a fusion of many languages and many thoughts, of geometric and geographical observations). As stages and heroes of mythological enterprises all to be narrated.

The project was made during the artist's residency at Atelier A in Apricale, from 2 September to 4 October 2019.

Questo progetto è il frutto di una ricerca sviluppatasi nel corso di un decennio, durante il quale ho registrato e catalogato porzioni di suoni e di rumori che mi hanno catturato non solo a un livello sensoriale, ma anche empatico ed emotivo. Le registrazioni sono rimaste congelate per tutti questi anni nella modalità di cartoline sonore. Come gli odori, rimangono intangibili, ma sono fenomeni scatenanti di impressioni reminiscenti di micro-eternità. Estrapolandoli ad intermittenza dal loro contesto originale, ho cercato di espandere il loro potere di interazione attraverso nuove modalità espressive. Le registrazioni sono state fatte nella natura selvaggia e in contesti metropolitani e urbani di Italia, Francia, Germania, Inghilterra, Giappone, Stati Uniti e Indonesia, tra il 2009 e il 2019. Tra i frammenti di realtà sonore raccolti, si possono ascoltare le voci degli altoparlanti in stazioni metropolitane giapponesi, le sirene del porto di Genova, (i versi meccanici delle funivie di Hakuba-Nagano, il brusio negli izakaya di Hiroshima, i tonfi delle timbrature in uffici postali toscani, lo scricchiolio dei ponti di ferro di Gare du Nord a Parigi, il dialogo misterioso tra correnti d’aria e statue del teatro greco di Akrai in Sicilia, il fragore delle eruzioni del vulcano Stromboli, il gorgoglio dei ruscelli di Rocchetta Nervina, i tuoni nella campagna francese della Borgogna, il vociare confuso nella metropolitana di Shibuya o all'imbarco dell’aeroporto Narita di Tokyo, le vibrazioni di reti elettriche a Berlino, un ascensore rotto di San Salvario a Torino, il canto dei gamelan durante cerimonie religiose balinesi, le ultime gocce d’acqua battenti su lastre di ferro dopo il temporale ad Apricale, la musica frusciante dei pini marittimi a Grimaldi, le serenate delle cicale Mediterranee e altri ancora. Dal corpo impalpabile di questo immenso archivio acustico ho selezionato 21 registrazioni, ad ognuna delle quali ho dato nuova forma e sostanza attraverso la realizzazione di un collage che cerca di interpretare il suono rendendolo visibile e tangibile. Ogni collage include una sua fonetica, ossia una rappresentazione grafica del suono che raffigura. E’ stata in seguito realizzata un’unica traccia sonora mettendo in relazionare mutuale tutte le registrazioni e trasformandole in un coro. Geofonia, biofonia e antropofonia interagiscono qui creando un linguaggio teatrale: partendo dall'alternarsi dei suoni puri originali, si passa al progressivo rimescolamento casuale degli stessi e si giunge a creare una ricca eufonia che delinea paesaggi acustici inesplorati e abitati da nuovi elementi sonori. (come una fusione di tanti linguaggi e tanti pensieri, di osservazioni geometriche e geografiche). Come palcoscenici ed eroi di imprese mitologiche tutte da narrare.
